Set the Scene

Before learners encounter new content, what do they need β€” what context, what connection to prior knowledge, what reason to care?

Purpose

  • Activate what learners already know so new content has somewhere to attach
  • Establish relevance β€” answer "why does this matter to me?"
  • Surface and address likely misconceptions before they solidify
  • Orient learners to what's coming and how the module is structured
  • Lower anxiety and build readiness before the cognitive demand increases

Watch for

  • Jumping straight to content without any context or hook
  • Module introductions that just list topics ("this week we'll cover...")
  • No connection to prior modules or real-world application
  • Assuming prior knowledge that many learners don't actually have
  • Missing the "why" β€” learners don't see the relevance before diving in

Purpose

  • Introduce new concepts, frameworks, vocabulary, or skills
  • Model what expert thinking or performance looks like
  • Chunk information into manageable pieces β€” not one dense block
  • Represent the content in multiple ways to reach varied learners
  • Provide the cognitive tools learners need before they Apply

Watch for

  • Content delivery without instruction β€” readings or videos alone aren't teaching
  • No modeling β€” asking learners to do things you haven't demonstrated
  • Information overload with no chunking or pacing built in
  • Passive consumption only β€” watch, read, repeat with no interaction
  • Transform content that doesn't connect back to the module objectives

  • Build the confidence and competence needed for Evaluate
  • Generate evidence of in-process learning (feeds into Gauge)

Watch for

  • No practice before the summative β€” learners go straight from Transform to Evaluate
  • Application tasks that are really just recall ("list the three steps")
  • Activities with no feedback loop β€” learners don't know how they did
  • Apply and Evaluate tasks that are identical in form and difficulty
  • Missing the "productive struggle" zone β€” tasks that are too easy teach nothing

Purpose

  • Give learners a clear sense of their own progress before the formal grade
  • Give the instructor actionable insight while there's still time to adjust
  • Create a feedback loop between Apply and Evaluate
  • Reduce surprises at the summative stage β€” no one should be blindsided
  • Identify who is struggling early enough to intervene

Watch for

  • No formative check between content delivery and the graded assessment
  • Gauge activities that are identical to the Evaluate (same format, same stakes)
  • Gauge with no feedback β€” checking in without telling anyone what you found
  • Formative data that instructors collect but never act on
  • Learners who can't tell whether they're ready for the summative

  • Provide a formal, graded opportunity to demonstrate learning
  • Produce evidence that aligns to module and course objectives
  • Distinguish between learners who have met outcomes and those who haven't
  • Give learners a meaningful culminating experience for this learning arc
  • Generate data for course improvement and institutional reporting

Watch for

  • Evaluate tasks that don't align to the module's stated objectives
  • Summatives that test different things than the Apply and Gauge prepared for
  • Format mismatch β€” format doesn't match what you're trying to measure
  • No rubric or success criteria visible before the task begins
  • An Evaluate that a learner could pass without understanding the content
