Q

Quality Purpose

Does this task have a clear, defensible learning purpose — and is that purpose connected to a course or module objective?

What to look for

  • The task connects clearly to at least one course or module learning objective
  • The purpose is learning-centered, not just completion-centered
  • If removed, students would miss a meaningful learning opportunity
  • The reason for the task makes sense to a thoughtful observer
  • Faculty can explain in one sentence what learning this task produces

Red flags

  • "We've always done it this way" is the main reason for this task
  • The task is primarily for grade points, not learning
  • The purpose is unclear even to the person who designed it
  • The task could be removed with no impact on learning outcomes
  • The task was copied from another course without review

Format-Specific Guidance

Ask: What do these questions actually test? If the quiz primarily tests whether students read or memorized terms, ask whether that level of recall is the real learning goal — or whether higher-order questions would serve the purpose better.

Watch for: Quiz banks copied from textbooks without review, low-stakes quizzes with no connection to module objectives, or questions that test trivia rather than understanding.

Ask: What does the discussion accomplish that a written assignment couldn't? Discussion is most purposeful when peer exchange is itself the learning activity — comparing perspectives, debating interpretations, or building on each other's thinking.

Watch for: Discussion prompts that are really just reflection questions with a social requirement bolted on. If students rarely read each other's posts, the "discussion" purpose isn't being served.

Ask: What does writing this essay teach or demonstrate? The essay format is most purposeful when the act of writing itself develops thinking — when students construct, synthesize, or argue, rather than just report information.

Watch for: Essay prompts so broad that any response passes, or prompts where students could copy-paste a summary without thinking. The purpose should be specific enough to shape what students write.

Ask: What real-world skill or complex understanding does this project develop? Projects are most purposeful when they require students to integrate multiple competencies or create something that demonstrates genuine mastery.

Watch for: Projects that are elaborate but measure only one narrow skill, or projects that are primarily about production value (graphics, formatting) rather than learning content.

Ask: Is the presentation format serving the learning, or is it just a delivery mechanism? Presentations are most purposeful when the communication component is itself a learning goal — when faculty want students to practice explaining, persuading, or teaching.

Watch for: Presentations assigned as a "change of pace" without a clear communication objective. If the slides are just a summary of a written report, consider whether both formats are necessary.

U

Understandable Expectations

Could a student who hasn't spoken to the instructor read this task and know exactly what to do, what success looks like, and how it will be evaluated?

What to look for

  • Directions are complete and unambiguous — no key details left unstated
  • Length, format, submission method, and deadline are all specified
  • Success criteria are visible before students begin (rubric, checklist, or examples)
  • Students can self-assess whether they're on track without asking the instructor
  • A new student to the course could complete the task without extra explanation

Red flags

  • Faculty regularly get the same clarifying questions assignment after assignment
  • The rubric is released after students submit ("that's not fair" moments)
  • Expectations only exist in the faculty member's head
  • Instructions reference "what we discussed in class" — excluding async students
  • Key terms in directions are undefined or discipline-specific without explanation

Format-Specific Guidance

Check each question stem: Is it complete and unambiguous? Are all answer options grammatically consistent with the stem? Do distractors represent plausible misconceptions, not tricks? Are "all of the above" and "none of the above" used sparingly?

Watch for: Negative stem phrasing ("Which is NOT...") without visual emphasis, ambiguous answer options that two students could reasonably interpret differently, and questions where the "correct" answer depends on which textbook edition you read.

Check: Does the prompt include word count expectations? Are peer response requirements specific (how many, by when, what quality)? Do students know what a strong response vs. a weak response looks like? Is there a visible rubric?

Watch for: Prompts that end with "share your thoughts" without specifying what kind of thinking is expected. Students need to know whether you want personal reflection, evidence-based argument, or application of a specific concept.

Check: Is the prompt specific enough that two students reading it independently would produce responses in the same territory? Are page/word minimums and maximums given? Is the citation format specified? Is a rubric visible before submission?

Watch for: Prompts with multiple embedded questions where students don't know which to prioritize. Break complex prompts into clearly numbered sub-questions so students know how to structure their response.

Check: Are all deliverables listed? Are milestones or checkpoints specified with dates? Is there an example of a completed project (exemplar) or a clear rubric? Do students understand how individual vs. group contributions will be assessed?

Watch for: Multi-week projects where students don't get feedback until the final submission. Build in at least one checkpoint with faculty or peer feedback so students can adjust before the final grade.

Check: Is the time limit stated clearly? Are students graded on slides, delivery, or both? Is the audience defined? Are technical requirements (software, file format, recording platform) specified? Is a self-reflection component required?

Watch for: Presentations with no specified time limit ("as long as you need") — this signals unclear expectations and leads to wildly inconsistent submissions. A range (e.g., 8–12 minutes) helps everyone.

E

Evidence of Learning

When a student submits this task, does it actually show you whether they learned what you intended?

What to look for

  • Completing the task successfully requires demonstrating the target learning
  • Faculty can distinguish between students who understand and those who don't
  • The task would be difficult to complete correctly without the learning
  • Student responses or products vary in meaningful ways based on understanding
  • Feedback on this task helps students identify what they still need to learn

Red flags

  • Students can pass by following instructions without understanding content
  • The task could be completed entirely by copying, paraphrasing, or generating AI text
  • High scores correlate with effort or formatting rather than understanding
  • Faculty can't use the results to tell who learned what
  • All students submit nearly identical responses regardless of skill level

Format-Specific Guidance

Check: Do the questions require students to apply or interpret — not just recall? Does each question target a specific misconception or knowledge gap? Can you use quiz results to group students for reteaching?

Watch for: Quiz banks where students can answer correctly by pattern-matching without understanding. Add at least some application-level questions ("In this scenario, which approach would...") to generate real evidence of comprehension.

Check: Do student responses demonstrate original thinking, not just agreement? Can you identify which students understood the concept and which are still confused? Do peer responses push thinking forward or just affirm?

Watch for: Discussions where every post says the same thing with slightly different words. If responses are homogeneous, the prompt likely isn't generating real evidence of individual learning. Ask students to stake a position or solve a specific problem.

Check: Does the essay require students to construct an argument or synthesize information? Can you identify which essays demonstrate genuine understanding vs. surface familiarity? Would the essay change meaningfully if the student understood the concept better?

Watch for: Summary essays where students just report what they read. These provide weak evidence of learning because summarizing doesn't require understanding — it requires comprehension. Add an "apply it" or "evaluate it" requirement.

Check: Does the project require students to make decisions that only someone who understands the content could make? Are there choices in the project that reveal depth of understanding? Can you distinguish an excellent project from an adequate one based on learning, not production value?

Watch for: Projects where well-formatted, aesthetically polished work earns high scores regardless of conceptual accuracy. Build criteria into the rubric that are only achievable if the student actually understands the content.

Check: Can you assess understanding from what students say, not just what's on the slides? Does the presentation require students to respond to questions or handle something unexpected? Is there a Q&A component that can reveal depth of knowledge?

Watch for: Presentations graded entirely on slide design, delivery fluency, and professionalism. These measure communication skills, not content learning. Add rubric criteria tied specifically to content accuracy and depth of understanding.

S

Suitable Response Design

Is the format — the way students respond — the right choice for what you're trying to measure?

What to look for

  • The response format genuinely serves the learning purpose (Q)
  • The format allows students to demonstrate the target skill or knowledge
  • The format is appropriate for the available time and student context
  • Students with different learning strengths have a fair chance of succeeding
  • The format doesn't create barriers unrelated to the learning goal

Red flags

  • The format measures something other than the stated learning goal
  • Students fail for technical or logistical reasons rather than learning gaps
  • The format disadvantages English language learners without justification
  • A different format would produce better evidence of learning with less effort
  • The format creates workload disproportionate to the learning outcome

Format-Specific Guidance

MCQ is suitable when: you need to efficiently assess broad content knowledge, you want automatic scoring at scale, or you're checking foundational understanding before students apply it. MCQ is NOT suitable when the learning goal requires students to construct, explain, or demonstrate a process.

Watch for: Using MCQ for learning goals that start with "construct," "create," "evaluate," or "develop." These verbs require constructed-response formats. MCQ can verify that students know something; it can't verify they can do it.

Discussion is suitable when: the learning goal involves perspective-taking, peer exchange, or collaborative sense-making. It's NOT suitable when the goal is just "share what you learned" — that's better served by reflection writing. The "discussion" part should be purposeful.

Watch for: Mandatory peer responses ("reply to two classmates") that generate low-quality exchanges ("Great point! I agree."). If the reply requirement doesn't specify what quality engagement looks like, it won't produce it.

Essays are suitable when: the learning goal requires students to construct arguments, synthesize sources, or develop extended reasoning. They are NOT suitable as a default format for all assessment — not everything worth assessing needs to be written.

Watch for: Courses where every assignment is an essay regardless of the learning goal. Consider whether annotated bibliographies, case analyses, or structured reflections might be more appropriate for some learning goals than open-ended essays.

Projects are suitable when: the learning goal requires applying multiple competencies together, and you want to assess integration rather than isolated skills. They work best when the product itself is meaningful to students, not just an assignment to complete.

Watch for: Projects assigned because they're "engaging" rather than because they produce better evidence of learning. If a simpler task would demonstrate the same competency with less workload, consider whether the project is worth the student time it costs.

Presentations are suitable when: communication and explanation are themselves part of the learning goal, or when presenting to an audience creates authentic context for the task. They're NOT suitable as a direct substitute for written analysis when communication isn't the goal.

Watch for: Presentations assigned in courses where communication skills aren't a learning objective. If a student with a speech difficulty is being assessed on content knowledge, consider whether a recorded presentation, narrated screencast, or written alternative would be more equitable.

T

Thinking Demand

Does this task require the level of cognitive effort you intend — and does it match the course or module's learning objectives?

What to look for

  • The task's cognitive level matches its learning objectives
  • The task requires more than recall or recognition to complete successfully
  • Students have to think, not just locate and transcribe information
  • The task challenges students appropriately for the course level
  • Students who just memorized content would not score as well as students who understood it

Red flags

  • The task is pitched significantly below the course's stated learning level
  • A student could complete it perfectly by searching Google and copying
  • There's no requirement to apply, analyze, evaluate, or create
  • Tasks across the course are all at the same cognitive level with no progression
  • The "hardest" task in the course is harder due to volume, not thinking complexity

Format-Specific Guidance

Use scenario-based questions, case interpretations, or "which approach would work best in this situation" stems to push beyond recall. A strong quiz includes at least some application and analysis-level questions, not only definitional recall.

Watch for: Quiz banks where every question is "According to the text, what is the definition of..." — these are recall-only. Map a sample of questions to Bloom's levels. If they're all Remember/Understand, revise toward application.

Require students to take a position, compare perspectives, evaluate a claim, or solve a problem — not just share what they found or what they think. "Analyze how X relates to Y in this specific context" demands more thinking than "what did you find interesting about X?"

Watch for: Discussion prompts where students are essentially summarizing the reading with their own opinion added. Push toward: "Given what you know about X, how would you advise someone facing Y?" — this requires application, not just recall plus reaction.

Choose verbs in your prompt that specify the cognitive level: compare, evaluate, argue, synthesize — not summarize or describe. Graduate-level courses should rarely accept descriptive summaries as primary evidence of learning.

Watch for: Prompts that ask students to "discuss" a topic — "discuss" is one of the vaguest academic terms and often produces descriptive writing at a lower cognitive level than intended. Replace with a specific verb: "evaluate," "argue," "compare," "apply."

Build in decision points where students must justify choices. If the project only requires producing a deliverable (a brochure, a presentation, a proposal), add a rationale component where students explain why they made the choices they did.

Watch for: Projects that can be completed by following a template without original thinking. If students only have to fill in blanks or follow a checklist step-by-step, the thinking demand is low regardless of the product's apparent complexity.

Include Q&A time, require students to anticipate counter-arguments, or ask them to present recommendations and defend them to a simulated audience. This moves presentations from "report what I found" to "think on your feet."

Watch for: Presentations that only require summarizing existing information. Add a "so what" requirement: students must connect the content to a real problem, propose a solution, or recommend a course of action — and be able to field questions about it.
